Rod Licence Requirement (England & Wales)
Anyone aged 13 or over fishing for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, or eels in England and Wales must have a valid Environment Agency rod licence.
Summary for anglers only — not legal advice. Rules change; always check the official source linked on this page and GOV.UK before fishing.
A rod licence is required by law for all anglers aged 13 and over who fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, or eels in England and Wales.
The licence does not give permission to fish — you also need permission from the fishery owner or angling club. Fishing without a valid rod licence can result in a fine of up to £2,500.
Licences are available as 1-day, 8-day, or 12-month options. Concessionary rates are available for juniors (13–16), seniors (65+), and disabled anglers.
You must carry your licence (or proof of purchase) while fishing and present it when requested by an Environment Agency bailiff.
